What is Generative AI? 3 Experts Weigh In

It’s a type of artificial intelligence that you can use to create content, like videos, text, graphics and videos.

Artificial intelligence has been around since the 1960 but in the past decade there’s been monumental growth. 

Along with the development and popularity of sites like chat gpt, there’s also been worry in the digital media field about whether AI will replace the need for social media managers, content creators, web designers and more.

In my view, AI is a tool that can be used to the success of these jobs, not replace them. The biggest need for social media managers and content creators isn’t that they can film, or come up with ideas but it doesn’t replace time. Clients who hire social media managers do so because they either don’t have the time, or don’t want to spend the time doing the leg work. This doesn’t disappear by AI gaining popularity. As of right now AI can make the ideas, can generate content calendars and even make videos, but as of right now, it can schedule all those posts, run ad campaigns and implement the content it came up with beyond creation. 

There’s also faults with AI that if used solely to replace a social media manager could damage your social growth. For example, AI is biased. The answers it gives and content it creates can lack diversity and accurate representation of POC or people with disabilities.

I asked people in the media industry what their thoughts of Generative AI were, and whether or not it will replace social media managers. I got answers from 23 people. Let’s break down the answers.

“Generative AI, huh? It’s like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get, but it’s mostly sweet stuff. Now, will it replace social media managers and web designers? Short answer: not entirely, but it’s definitely shaking things up.

Let’s break it down. For social media managers, generative AI is like having a Swiss Army knife in your pocket. It can churn out content ideas, write catchy posts, even help with customer service chats. But here’s the kicker: it doesn’t have the human touch. AI can’t fully grasp brand voice or the nuances of human emotion. You know, that gut feeling when crafting a message that hits just right. Social media is all about connection, and that’s where humans still have the upper hand.

Now, web designers, they’re looking at a different ball game. AI can pump out website layouts, color schemes, even some nifty user interfaces. It’s a time saver, no doubt. But web design isn’t just about looking pretty. It’s about user experience, SEO, making sure your site not only looks good but also ranks high and converts visitors into customers. AI’s getting there, but it still needs a human pilot to navigate these waters.

So, here’s the deal: generative AI is a powerful tool, but it’s just that – a tool. It’s not gonna steal the show entirely. Think of it more like a super-efficient assistant. It’ll help social media managers and web designers do their jobs faster and maybe even better. But at the end of the day, creativity, emotional intelligence, and strategic thinking? That’s where you and I come in. AI’s got nothing on that… yet.”

  2. Understanding Context:AI might face challenges understanding the nuanced context of specific industries, brands, or cultural references, which are crucial for effective social media management and web design.
  3. Human Touch:Social media managers often bring a personal touch and human understanding to content creation and engagement. AI may lack the emotional intelligence required for certain aspects of social media management.
  4. Customization and Branding:Businesses often require a unique and consistent brand voice. Generative AI might struggle to capture the specific nuances and tone associated with individual brands.

I think generative AI can help social media managers and web designers, but not replace them. Social media managers and web designers are professionals who have skills, knowledge, and experience that generative AI does not have. They can use generative AI to make their work easier and faster, but they still need to check, edit, and improve the things that generative AI makes. They also need to make sure that the things that generative AI makes are appropriate, accurate, and ethical.

For example, social media managers can use generative AI to:

  • Generate ideas for posts, captions, hashtags, or images.
  • Analyze the trends, sentiments, and preferences of their audience.
  • Schedule and optimize their posts for the best time and platform.

But they still need to:

  • Review and edit the content that generative AI generates to make sure it matches their brand voice, tone, and style.
  • Monitor and respond to the feedback and comments from their audience.
  • Evaluate and measure the performance and impact of their posts.

Similarly, web designers can use generative AI to:

  • Generate layouts, colors, fonts, or images for their websites.
  • Generate code, animations, or interactions for their websites.
  • Generate content, headlines, or keywords for their websites.

But they still need to:

  • Review and edit the design that generative AI generates to make sure it meets the user needs, goals, and expectations.
  • Test and debug the code that generative AI generates to make sure it works well and is secure.
  • Evaluate and measure the usability and accessibility of their websites.

Therefore, I think generative AI is a powerful and helpful tool for social media managers and web designers, but it is not a replacement for them. They still need to use their human skills, creativity, and judgment to make the best use of generative AI. 😊”
